Despicable Me 2 Review

5 Jul

I’ve been super busy, so here’s a quick review of the new animated movie Despicable Me 2. I feel so wordpress-deprived 😮 As always, no serious spoilers will be mentioned.

I really enjoyed the original Despicable Me, so I had high hopes for its sequel. The premise was that Gru, an ex-villain and family man to his three newly adopted daughters, was forced to come out of early “retirement” and help the Anti-Villain League catch a villain concealed at a local mall. In the process, he is partnered with Lucy Wild(e?), whom he initially dislikes for her over-exuberance.

In terms of humor, this film nails it. I giggled along with every kid (and adult) in that theater from beginning to end credits. In that respect it’s definitely on par with the original. However, this sequel was very focused on romance, which seems contrived and therefore not enjoyable to watch.

Compared to the first movie, the plot is very predictable. I usually don’t mind but in this case I was wishing the important plotline would be over so I could enjoy the little yellow minions wreaking havoc. The little bits of humor usually intended to provide comic relief basically carried the entire movie, which is fine for kids but a bit boring and meaningless for the adults they dragged behind them.

All in all, I’d give it a 3.5/5 because I have a soft spot for this movie. I loved the original and would definitely watch the sequel again. It ends with a few aww moments, we get to see the minions (watch the credits for more minion goodness), and Gru is his usual lovable self. I’d recommend seeing this movie, but don’t expect it to be as good as the original.
