Obligatory Reflection on the Past Year

2 Jan

Hey there friends. I’m wondering if I can post this exact post at the beginning of each new year and see if anyone notices. Anywho, since everyone’s been posting their 2014 recaps, I figured I’d throw mine in the pile.

Makeup over the past year has been pretty darn ok. I’m cringing as I look through old posts with pictures taken with my old, muy crappy camera, un-collaged due to my being an uncultured peasant. I’d like to think my newer material is more aesthetically pleasing. I’ve also learned how to use transitional shades to blend eyeshadows, and that lip products containing menthol give me a rash. I’ve finally figured out that eyebrows ought to have a shape to them, and that it’s ok if that shape isn’t the same for both brows.

A few of my favorite looks from 2014; click the pictures for more on that look 🙂

School has been awful as usual, but I took the SAT and ACT once each, submitted 5 college applications, and have already been accepted to my state’s university. Not really much of a hooray, but at least I can fall back on it if my other options don’t pan out.

As far as personal achievements ago, I got a job! Then I hated it, so I quit and got another one. I was one of the head makeup artists for my school’s production of Cinderella. I’m preparing to take my red belt test in Taekwondo, and I biked 300 miles to fundraise for MS. And before you go getting the impression of me as a person who possesses any athletic ability whatsoever, no, no I do not.

2014 was a good year for movies and TV in general. I saw Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb on New Year’s Eve and damn it was touching. Every time Robin Williams said something I sort of sniffled. Superhero movies (a genre of their own, obviously) were kind of on the down-low this year except GUARDIANS OF THE FREAKING GALAXY of course *drools* Still waiting on my mini Groot…

And uh, Supernatural Season 10 has been…

Yeah, I’m still not over the majesty that was episode 5, Fan Fiction.

Ugh, what else happened this year? I’m still waiting on a happening, actually. This year has been all about waiting. Hopefully 2015 will be a more decisive, get-things-done kind of year for me.

Anywho, didn’t mean to get too introspective and reminiscent with this post, but if you can’t do that at New Years, when can you? I’m so grateful for all of you and I look forward to reading everyone’s thoughts in the coming year. YES. I CAN READ MINDS.

10 Makeup Tips I Wish Someone Had Hammered Into Me Sooner

22 Jul

Hello, all! Got some life advices for you today, complete with a battery of fantastic Supernatural gifs.

How does that differ from the norm, you ask? I dunno, but…Supernatural gifs!

1. Everything you need to know is on Youtube.

If you added up the hours I’ve spent mindlessly watching tutorials of things I already know how to do, you’d have half my lifespan.

2. There are no unfixable mistakes.

It’s MAKEUP, come on. Just dip a cutip in makeup remover and try to contain your tears.

gross sobbing sam

3. If you like it, wear it.

If thick black gel liner is your THANG, then by all means, go for it. If you hate makeup because you firmly believe it violates the RULES OF FEMINISM, you know where you can shove that stick.

4. Quality, not quantity…except as a beginner.

When I started out with makeup, I bought $150 worth of e.l.f. If you know e.l.f, you know that that is a SH*T TON of e.l.f. And I needed to do that, I needed to buy a bright blue loose pigment that I had no idea how to use, and I needed a mascara primer even though I did not own a single mascara, and don’t even talk to me about the lipglosses that tasted like fermented Kool-aid.

Now, I try to reel it in, to read reviews, to consider how many hours of cash register adds up to the cost of the new Lorac palette (5 1/4), and to mercilessly throw out makeup that I no longer use (side-eye at e.l.f.). As a result, my makeup collection is composed of, for the most part, products that I enjoy and would recommend to others. This will not happen overnight, and it will not happen without a fair amount of sacrifice. And tears.

no one likes it dean and cas

5. Acne, brazenly uncooperative eyebrows, redness, puffy eyes, etc. are not things to be ashamed of.

They are not mistakes that require an apology. They are there to remind us that we are human, to make us better at what we do, and to eventually accept as features, not flaws.

…Still waiting on that last one…

6. There are things you just need to master, and eyeliner is one of them.

sorry cas

Call it a work in progress (I do!).

7. There are things that you can let slide, and no one will notice.

Mascara dots on your eyelid? Psh girl, if somebody is that close to you, their tongue is probably in your mouth and they don’t care if you can’t apply mascara.

8. Photography is hard. Makeup photography requires selling your house and your soul to Lucifer to pay for a good camera.

But it’s so totally worth it.

Right? RIGHT?!

9. Everyone has something to teach, and everyone has something to learn.

So philosophy. Much wise.

10. I’m kidding. I got no ten. Ten is for you. Fill in the blank (____________) in the comments below 🙂

Welp, this is going downhill fast.

Shoot me a comment if you enjoyed this post or if you have any suggestions for future tutorials, reviews, and tags; I’d love to hear them!

MS TRAM 2014 Recap w/ Pictures!

19 Jul

Hello, all! So I mentioned I’d been on a bike trip, which is why I’ve been so bad about posting.

I mean, why I haven’t posted for 2 days.

I’m a little obsessive.

MS TRAM (The Ride Across Minnesota) is a fundraiser for MS research. My mother has a non-aggressive form of the disease, and we’ve been doing fundraising events since I was quite small. We’ve been considering this event for a few years, but haven’t due to our gross out-of-shapeness. I guess this year we figured, what the hell/carpe diem/why not/how bad could it be, and we rather impulsively signed up.

Heeeere is the aftermath!

Day 0: Sunday. I call it Day 0 because there wasn’t any actual biking. We started in Welch Village (the ski resort, which looked pretty weird in the summer) and were driven by coach bus 300 miles west to Pipestone, MN; where we camped for the night.

Pictures (L-R): Top of tent with hanging lantern, really messy tent setup, sunset, and I beat that original IQ test game thing that traumatized my childhood. Proud moment.
