Movie Review: Frozen

9 Jan

This movie was BEAUTIFUL. But it was basically Tangled set in Minnesota right about now. Ya. Ya betcha.

Frozen is not a love story.

Yay! I hate love stories.

When Princess Anna’s older sister Elsa accidentally plunges the world into a blizzard, then disappears into the mountains, Anna and a few anthropomorphic buddies must travel through the snow and ice to bring Elsa back, fighting her enemies and Elsa herself along the way.

Let me tell you, animated movies do not get much better than this in terms of quality animation. Elsa (the snow queen)’s icy creations were spectacular. The songs were amazing. The characters were lovable. It was just…very unoriginal. And weirdly paced! The first 20 minutes flew by in a hailstorm of love-at-first-sight and tragic deaths, followed by an hour and a half of hiking about in the snow. And could they not have developed Elsa’s character a bit more? I empathized more with her than with her wide-eyed little sister Anna.

There was one aspect of the movie that I found incredibly relatable- the often-tumultuous relationship between sisters. One minute we’d die for each other and the next we’re at each other’s throats. So it goes.

The themes of sisters sticking together and I-don’t-need-no-man were very well emphasized, so bravo Disney! It was a hard sell so soon after Tangled, but points for the warm fuzzies. And this amazing song!

Must…do….Frozen inspired…makeup….*crawls to desk*

In other, unrelated news, Minnesota schools are cancelled for the second day in a row due to icy temperatures of 30 below with windchill. Or something.

About time Disney made a movie that didn’t end with the girl being swept off her feet by a prince! I’m so excited to see this with my two year old girl. Thanks for a great review!
