Rediscovering a Favorite Book

24 Jun

I was perusing my local bookstore the other day when I spotted a book that I’d loved when I was younger, The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. It was a weird book, not my usual fantasy-and-mystery type, but I really loved it. Having actually remembered to bring my gift card, I bought it on a whim for my little sister.

Today she finally started reading it after hours of my constant insistence. She’s always been a bit like me in that respect- willing to try new things, but not if someone forces her to do them. Luckily she’s enjoying it so far. I even popped in and skimmed a few pages, much to her annoyance.

Seeing that book in her hand, instead of a laptop or an iPad or any one of the numerous electronic devices available to kids her age, made me strangely happy. I want her to grow up like I did, surrounded by books and plenty of time to read them. I don’t want her to have the excuses that I do for refusing to pick up a book.
